Signs of Ovulation
Firstly, there will be a change in cervical mucus – it will increase and be thicker. Some women describe it as similar to egg whites – this would be when you are at your most fertile. (www.babyhopes.com)

Your body temperature will rise. Some women will record their body temperature and chart it daily, prior to conception, to enable a clearer indication of when ovulation is most likely. When an egg is released, your body temperature rises sharply – as the progesterone hormone increases. Some women will be at their most fertile 2-3 days before their temperature rises and up to 2 days afterwards. (www.babyhopes.com)

Lower abdominal discomfort – this can range from mild to severe aches, lasting a few moments to a few days. (www.babyhopes.com)

Breast tenderness
Calculating Ovulation dates
It is helpful when trying to establish ovulation dates to record your cycle over at least three months. That way you will get the average and hopefully see a pattern of how you are feeling, your body is reacting at certain times each month.

There are some very useful tools on the internet – www.mymonthlycycles.com for one.

A woman usually ovulates around 14 days before the start of her next period. E.g. if you have a regular 28 day cycle, then ovulation is around day 14. However, physical changes in yourself will also help – recording temperature, breast tenderness, mucus levels and generally how you are feeling may also give an indication

You can purchase ovulation predictors – however, these can be costly. Once you have determined your ovulation date, then its recommended that you make love within 24 hours if the positive test.

Natural Fertility – this involves taking your temperature and checking your mucous levels daily, allowing a good understanding of your body.
It is then advisable to make love as often as possible !

No Prediction – Basically, you make love every 2-3 days from the end of your period until 10 days before your next period is due. This is a more relaxed approach, but some find it tiring. However, it does indicate that sperm would be present when the egg is. www.gettingpregnant.co.uk

Ways of improving chances of conception
Having sexual intercourse at the right time of each month will greatly help.
And, lots of intercourse – just once maybe enough, but not always … the more sexual intercourse you have the more likely you are to conceive.

Avoiding stress, relaxing and taking good care of your health and fitness will also improve your chances (www.gettingpregnant.co.uk)

There is a thought that if you haven’t had sexual intercourse for 10 days, the quality of the sperm may be slightly weaker – therefore decreasing chances of conception.

The more stimulated you are – the more likely you are to conceive

The general opinion is that missionary position is best
When do I take a test ?
The most accurate way is to wait and test after your period is due. Every woman is different, and although you may get a negative test, this does not always indicate that you are not pregnant. There are early detection tests which can pick up a positive result before your period is due, but the thinking is that implantation may not take place until days 8-10 after ovulation and therefore a test may not show as positive.

How do Pregnancy Tests work ?
When taking a home pregnancy test, you need to soak a test strip into your stream of urine, and leave it for the stated amount of time – usually around 2 minutes. You will see a control line which is always present. If you are pregnant, another line will appear – this relates to the levels of HCG in your urine - this colour will vary dramatically depending on how pregnant you are.
The first urine of the morning is usually the most effective as the HCG levels are at their strongest then www.babyhopes.com
How long will it take to conceive ?
If you are using no contraception, have sexual intercourse around 2-3 times a week, and are fit and healthy, there should be no reason why you would not conceive within 12 months.
According to www.parenting.ivillage.com 60% will conceive within 6 months, 75% within 9 months, 80% within 12 months and 90% within 18 months.
Any longer than 12 months and its suggested that you speak to your GP for fertility advice.
